A dentist is also known as a ‘dental surgeon’, he/she is a health care practitioner who specialises in the diagnosis, prevention & treatment of diseases & conditions of the oral cavity. The dentist’s supporting team aids in providing oral health services. The dental team includes dental assistants, dental hygienists, dental technicians & in some states dental therapists.

There are many specialized fields in dentistry, the respective fields are dental public health, endodontics, oral & maxillofacial pathology, oral& maxillofacial radiology, oral &maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics& dentofacial orthopaedics, periodontology, paediatric dentistry & prosthodontics.

Dentistry is the branch of medicine that involves the study, diagnosis, prevention &treatment of diseases, disorders & conditions of the oral cavity, the maxillofacial area & the adjacent & associated structures & their impact on the human body. The layman thinks that dentistry is primarily focused on human teeth, but it is not only limited to human teeth anymore. Dentistry is considered necessary for overall complete oral health.

Dentists also encourage prevention of oral diseases through proper hygiene & regular, twice yearly check-ups for professional cleaning & evaluation.

Dentists have found out that if patients do not take good care of their oral cavity then it may lead to systemic diseases such as osteoporosis, diabetes or cancer. According to many studies gum disease is associated with an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease &preterm birth. So one should always follow his /hers dentists advice so that they can prevent themselves from the above said diseases which effect the human body.
